The popular way to wear blush in the '80s was in very strong, bright colors. That style has definitely changed. When it comes to blush, less is more. Your choice may be based on the look you are trying to achieve or even what kind of weather conditions you are dealing with. Here are some guidelines to the different types of blush.
Cream Blush
Cream blush comes in tubes and pots and ranges from dry to a little glossy. This is a great choice if you have dry or mature skin and want more of a youthful glow. Easy to blend, the blush is best applied starting with a small amount on the apples and blending toward the temples, working in downward and outward (toward temples) swipes. Use a wedge sponge to clean up any excess.
Blush Stain
Blush stain is great for hotter weather or if you have a tendency to sweat. Apply to clean, moisturized skin. (This allows better blending.) If you're wearing foundation, apply stain after foundation and before powder. Sometimes stains are hard to remove. If you've used too much and need to make some adjustments, use makeup remover. If it still hasn't completely come off, use foundation or concealer to cover the area (this will help subdue the color).
Liquid Highlighter
Liquid highlighter is perfect to use on the area above the apples of the cheeks near the temples. It gives the cheeks that glow you see in magazine spreads. It's quite easy to achieve this look as it's all about using the right product. Look for products whose descriptions contain key words like "highlighter" or "illuminating." To apply, place a little bit of the product on your finger and dab along the top part of the cheekbone.
Gel Blush
Gel blush looks like Jell-0 and is similar to a blush stain but easier to work with, as it is not as intense in color as the stain, but lasts almost as long.
Powder Blush
Powder blush is an oldie but a goodie. Powder is great for women of all ages. It comes in every color under the sun and in all kinds of textures. I prefer powders that have a tiny bit of shimmer in them, creating a soft, pearly hue.
