Foundation Tools

On top of worrying about colour and texture, you need to make sure that your foundation tool is right for you. Different tools give a different effect to foundation.
Wedge Sponge
This is great if you have a hard time with blending. Sponges release less product, making it easier to blend. Apply foundation directly onto the sponge and spread over the face as outlined in the "How to Apply Foundation" article. You can also use sponges to blend out foundation if you've applied too much using the other tools. On the downside, sponges absorb product so you are likely to go through your foundation twice as fast. Buy disposable sponges for the most sanitary usage. If you have more expensive reusable sponges, wash them regularly, paying attention to their washing instructions. (They usually need to be washed in warm water with a mild soap.)
Your Fingers
The cheapest method will often give you the heaviest application. The heat of your fingers warms up the foundation and helps it blend more easily into the skin. Make sure your hands are clean, using soap and water before working with any product. Apply foundation onto your fingers and, using small quantities at a time, spread foundation onto your face. Of course, it can be a bit of a mess. If you've just gotten a manicure you may want to opt for another method.
Foundation Brush
You’ll feel like Picasso when you use this brush. It is usually made of synthetic fibers and because it absorbs little to no product it affords you a lot of control over the application. Choose a brush that thins out at the tip. The best foundation brushes are those with synthetic fibers made of high-quality taklon. Wash this brush regularly, following manufacturer’s instructions. (They usually need to be washed in warm water with shampoo.)
