Gel Liner

This is one of the newcomers to the eyeliner world. I had to get used to the idea of working with a gel liner skeptical, but now I can't live without it. It's a great tool to create a perfect sharp line and is also great for mature skin. It gives the eye a lined look without pulling at the delicate skin! You do need to work quickly, as once it's set it doesn't move.

Liquid liner brush

Liquid eyeliner is almost always found in a tube similar to mascara and comes with its own brush. If you are a novice to liquid eyeliners look for a stiff applicator made of a dense synthetic material. Glide the tip of the brush along the outer lash line, pressing lightly for a thin line and increasing pressure for a thicker line.

Liquid liner foam

I like this dense foam liner because it's more forgiving than a brush and gives you the control of a pencil, without losing the sharp liquid liner look.

Eyeliner pencil

You get what you pay for when it comes to pencil eyeliner. Avoid pencil liners that are waxy and hard, as they pull at the skin and don't deposit enough color. Pencils should be soft and go on smoothly. I love eyeliner pencils because I can smudge the line I draw with an eyeliner brush and create a sultry, smoky eye. Set this liner with shadow to minimize bleeding and use waterproof liner for defined lines that don't smudge or smear. Pencils are especially great for lower lids.

Waterproof liner

Most eyeliners of any type are available in waterproof form, which is great for Asian women because, due to the shape of some Asian eyelids, liners tend to smudge, particularly on the lower lids. If you are investing in a waterproof liner, definitely splurge on one that goes on smoothly and doesn't pull at the skin around the eye.

Colored cream liners

Consider colors other than black or brown, colored liners in layer 3 instead of shadow for a longlasting intense eye. They are a little heavier than cream shadows so they last longer, and come in nice shimmers as well. If you're using a fun color make sure you add black or brown liner in layer 4 to help neutralize the look. With colored liners look for creamy textures that don't crumble and aren't too waxy or hard in texture. If it glides on smoothly and stays put, you have a winner. If you really have a smudging problem you can also use gel liners.

White liner

Use white liner to mark off your brow tweezing area. Look for one with a creamy texture. You can get away with using an inexpensive brand for this purpose. White liner that has beige tones is also great to use on the lower rim of the eye to brighten and open up tired red eyes. Pure white liner should only be used for a dramatic or costume look.
