Warning: Do not always believe what you read in magazines! A while ago, one of the current beauty magazines in Asia wrote of a brand of concealer as the best concealer of the year. The same concealer had been reviewed many times as a worthy concealer, but not for Asian women. Make sure when you read "Best Beauty Product" awards they're referring to products that work for Asian women, not just the masses. It is essential to know what you'll be applying to your skin. Here are 6 different types of concealer for you to start with.
Cake concealer
This stuff is intense. Cake concealer is very dense in texture and opaque in coverage. I prefer cake for oily skin and to cover imperfections in the skin, like scarring or acne.
Pen concealer
These concealers are very light in texture but can cover light to medium dark circles. They're usually best for dry skin or fine lines under the eye or if other concealers are too cakey for your skin. However, I have never seen pen concealers for darker skin, which is fine because I prefer creams for darker skin anyway.
Stick concealer
This medium-to-heavy coverage concealer has similar texture to a cake concealer but is usually less dense. I usually don't even use a powder after applying this concealer, and if I do it has to be very sheer. This is my choice for warm weather, or if you have a problem with concealers staying put.
Treatment concealer
This is similar in consistency to a pen concealer and usually comes in a pen or wand (the same ones lip gloss comes in). The concealer contains fruit or salicylic acids and antibacterial medication for the treatment of acne. For best effect, use a small brush or cotton swab to apply powder to the blemish after applying the concealer. Since the product is very thin, there's greater risk of it moving around on the skin so apply it gently and only use it on areas with acne, but not around the eye area. See your dermatologist to treat severe acne.
Cream concealer
I like this creamy butterlike texture better for the undereye area as it contains more moisture and is great for concealing dark circles. It provides medium to heavy coverage and comes in a tube or pot.
Tattoo cover concealer
This heavily pigmented concealer is definitely an insider secret and is also used for perfectly covering moles, freckles, blackheads, and scarring. These are the heaviest of concealers and are specifically designed to cover tattoos. I once covered a girl's tattoo and she had forgotten what her legs looked like without it. I've actually had two occasions where models have shown up on set with a black eye and this covered it perfectly, so the client never knew.
